Ashley Elizabeth Hinson was born on June 27, 1983, in Des Moines, Iowa, to a financial advisor father and a teacher mother. After graduating from Valley High School in West Des Moines, she studied broadcast journalism at the University of Southern California.
Her early media work included a Los Angeles internship at KABC-TV and a job operating cameras and editing evening newscasts at WOI-TV in Des Moines. She then spent more than ten years reporting and anchoring for KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids, winning two regional Emmy Awards.
Career
Hinson won election to the Iowa House of Representatives in 2016, taking the 67th district in Linn County with 62.5% of the vote against Democrat Mark Seidl, and became the first woman to hold that seat.
She won a second term in 2018 against teacher Eric Gjerde and chaired the Transportation Committee.
In the 2020 election for Iowa's 1st congressional district she defeated the Democratic incumbent, Abby Finkenauer, by 51.2% to 48.6%; she and Mariannette Miller-Meeks were jointly the first Republican women to win election to the U.S. House from Iowa.
After redistricting renumbered most of her territory as the 2nd district, she won there in 2022 against Liz Mathis and in 2024 against Sarah Corkery.
In the House she sat on the Appropriations Committee and co-chaired the Congressional Biofuels Caucus, and in 2023 she introduced the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression Act on state rules for farm products.
2026 race
Hinson declared her candidacy on September 2, 2025, after Republican Senator Joni Ernst announced that she would leave the Senate at the end of her second term.
With endorsements from President Donald Trump and from Ernst, Hinson won the Republican primary on June 2, 2026, with 73.9% of the vote against former state senator Jim Carlin.
In the November 3 general election she faces the Democratic nominee, state representative Josh Turek, in Iowa's first open Senate race held alongside an open governor's race since 1968.
