Brittany Pettersen was born on December 6, 1981. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the Metropolitan State University of Denver. Before running for state representative, she worked for New Era Colorado, a nonprofit progressive political advocacy group that works to increase youth participation in politics and the government process.

Career

Brittany Pettersen represented the 28th district in the Colorado House of Representatives and later the 22nd district in the Colorado Senate, which she won in 2018. During the 2013 legislative session she opposed a repeal of the death penalty in Colorado.

In July 2019 the Colorado secretary of state approved a recall petition against her for circulation, and its organizers abandoned the effort on September 10, 2019, without submitting signatures.

She had first announced a campaign for Colorado's 7th congressional district in April 2017, after Ed Perlmutter said he would run for governor, and ended it when Perlmutter re-entered the race.

After Perlmutter announced his retirement, Pettersen ran again in 2022 and defeated Republican Erik Aadland with over 56% of the vote. She was reelected in 2024 over Republican Sergei Matveyuk with 55.3%. On July 12, 2024, she called for Joe Biden to withdraw from the presidential election.

In 2025, about a month after giving birth to her second son, she flew to Washington, D.C., to vote on a continuing resolution, and she has worked with Representative Anna Paulina Luna on a measure to allow proxy voting for up to 12 weeks for members who have given birth or whose spouse has given birth.

In the 119th Congress she serves on the Committee on Financial Services and co-chairs the Future Forum.
