Political landscape in Colorado
Overview
Colorado lies in the Mountain West, meeting Arizona, New Mexico and Utah at the Four Corners and bordering Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma. Its terrain takes in the bulk of the Southern Rockies, the Colorado Plateau's northeastern section and the westernmost Great Plains, and the state also has mesas, canyons, forests and desert. The state is eighth in area and 20th in population. Denver is the capital and largest city and anchors the Front Range Urban Corridor, with Colorado Springs ranking second. Settlers arrived in large numbers during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush, which lasted from 1858 to 1862; President James Buchanan signed the act creating the Territory of Colorado in 1861, and President Ulysses S. Grant admitted it as the 38th state on August 1, 1876. Manufacturing, tourism, mining, agriculture, and government and defense are major parts of the economy, which faces pressure from rising temperatures and shrinking water supplies.
Officeholders
As of October 2026, Governor Jared Polis is a Democrat, as are the state's US senators, Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper.
2026 elections
Colorado voters will settle a US Senate race and the governor's race on November 3, 2026, alongside elections in all eight House districts and fourteen ballot measures, among them Amendments 81 through 87, Propositions 132 through 137 and Proposition NN.
