2026 race

Chris Chaffee is the Republican nominee in the 2026 election for Maryland's 5th congressional district, which is based in southern Maryland and takes in Charles, St. Mary's, and Calvert counties along with the Washington, D.C. suburbs of Bowie and Upper Marlboro.

The seat is open because Democratic incumbent Steny Hoyer, who was re-elected with 67.8% of the vote in 2024, announced in early January that he would forgo another term.

Chaffee won the Republican primary with 51.2% of the vote, defeating businesswoman Michelle Talkington, the party's 2024 nominee for the district, who took 34.9%, and veteran Bryan DuVal Cubero at 14.0%.

In the general election on November 3, 2026, he faces Democrat Adrian Boafo, a state delegate from the 23rd district since 2023, who won his party's primary with 32.7% of the vote.
