No story this week names this candidate.
Adrian Boafo was born in Arlington, Virginia, on May 10, 1994, to parents who had immigrated to the United States from Ghana in the 1980s, and he was raised in Maryland.
He graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School in 2012 and from the University of Baltimore, where he was student government president, with a Bachelor of Arts in government and public policy in 2016. He received a Master of Business Administration from American University in 2019.
Early in his career Boafo worked as a press intern for U.S. representative Xavier Becerra and as a national press assistant for U.S. representative Ruben Kihuen, then served as campaign manager for House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer from 2018 to 2021.
Adrian Boafo entered elected office on November 6, 2019, when he won a seat on the Bowie city council in District 3 with 34.8% of the vote, and the council then chose him as the city's youngest mayor pro tempore.
On the council he introduced a rebate of up to $50 for residents installing water filtration systems and helped launch a similar rebate for home security cameras.
He announced a run for the Maryland House of Delegates in District 23 on February 25, 2022, placed second in the Democratic primary on July 19, 2022, with 14.4% of the vote, and was sworn in on January 11, 2023. In the House of Delegates he was a member of the Economic Matters Committee.
Boafo also worked as a federal lobbyist for the Oracle Corporation, was a delegate to the 2024 Democratic National Convention, and founded the federal political action committee GenBlue PAC in September 2024.
Adrian Boafo announced on January 12, 2026, that he would run for Maryland's 5th congressional district, a southern Maryland seat covering Charles, St. Mary's, and Calvert counties along with Bowie and Upper Marlboro.
The seat is open because Democratic incumbent Steny Hoyer, re-elected with 67.8% of the vote in 2024, announced in early January that he would retire.
Boafo won the Democratic primary on June 23, 2026, with 32.7% of the vote, ahead of Quincy Bareebe at 17.3% in a field that also included former Prince George's County executive Rushern Baker.
In the general election on November 3, 2026, he faces Republican Chris Chaffee, a perennial candidate who won his own primary with 51.2%.
