Chuck Gray, born on February 3, 1990, is from La Crescenta, California, and grew up in the Los Angeles area. As a child he spent summers in Casper, Wyoming, with his father, Jan Charles Gray, who owned Mount Rushmore Broadcasting.
After finishing high school in 2008, Gray enrolled at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he wrote a political column for The Daily Pennsylvanian and graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in economics.
He then moved to Wyoming full time and hosted a conservative talk radio program on KVOC-AM in Casper, a station owned by his father.
Gray lost a 2014 Republican primary for the Wyoming House of Representatives to incumbent Thomas Lockhart, then won the 57th district seat in 2016 and was reelected in 2018 and 2020.
In the Legislature he was a founding member of the Wyoming Freedom Caucus, sponsored the state's 2021 voter identification law and served on the Revenue, Judiciary, Agriculture and Management Audit committees.
In 2021 he launched a primary challenge to U.S. Representative Liz Cheney, withdrawing after Donald Trump endorsed Harriet Hageman.
Gray then ran for Wyoming Secretary of State in 2022 on a campaign focused on claims about election fraud and the security of elections, defeating State Senator Tara Nethercott in the primary with 48.3% and running unopposed in the general election.
As secretary of state since 2023, Gray has focused on voter registration and voting procedures, directing county clerks in June 2024 to stop using unattended ballot drop boxes, and championing 2025 legislation requiring proof of citizenship and residency to register. He served as acting governor in April 2025 while Governor Mark Gordon was on a trade mission to Japan and Taiwan.
Gray launched his campaign for Wyoming's at-large U.S. House seat on December 29, 2025, after incumbent Republican Harriet Hageman chose to seek election to the U.S. Senate.
In the Republican primary on August 18, 2026, he won a field of nine candidates with 31,224 votes, or 25.4%, ahead of conservative activist Steve Friess with 20.4% and military veteran Kevin Christensen with 17.6%.
