Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Eugene Vindman was born Yevgeny Semyonovich Vindman on June 6, 1975, to a Jewish family in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, together with his identical twin brother, Alexander.

After their mother's death, their father brought the family to New York in December 1979, where they lived in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Vindman graduated from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in history.

He later earned a master's degree from Central Michigan University, a law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law and a master of laws from the Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School. He is married to Cindy Vindman, and they have two children.

Career

Commissioned in the U.S. Army after college, Vindman served for 25 years as a paratrooper, infantryman and Judge Advocate General's Corps attorney, was deployed to Iraq, and retired in 2022 as a lieutenant colonel.

In 2018 he was assigned as a deputy legal adviser to the National Security Council, where he was the senior ethics official.

After his brother told him about President Donald Trump's July 25, 2019, telephone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Vindman advised reporting it to the council's lead counsel, and he was reassigned from the council on February 7, 2020.

Since 2022 he has been director of military analysis and prosecution support for the Atrocity Crimes Advisory group, which supports Ukraine's prosecutor general.

In November 2023, Vindman announced a campaign for the 7th district seat then held by Democrat Abigail Spanberger. He won the Democratic primary on June 18, 2024, and defeated Republican Derrick Anderson on November 5, 2024, taking office on January 3, 2025. He serves on the Committee on Agriculture, where he is vice ranking member of the Subcommittee on Commodity Markets, Digital Assets, and Rural Development, and on the Committee on Armed Services.

2026 race

Eugene Vindman is seeking re-election in Virginia's 7th congressional district, which spans suburban, exurban and rural parts of Northern and Central Virginia, including Culpeper, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Stafford and Woodbridge.

He won the seat in 2024 with 51.2% of the vote and faced no opponent in the 2026 Democratic primary. His Republican opponent is Doug Ollivant, who served on the National Security Council under President George W. Bush as director for Iraq.

Six candidates appear on the ballot for the general election on November 3, 2026, including independents Alaha Ahrar, Joshua Ertle and Randall Terry, the Constitution Party's 2024 presidential nominee, and Libertarian Taner Lopez.
