Political landscape in Virginia
Overview
Virginia, formally a commonwealth, stretches from the Atlantic shore west to the Appalachians within the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, bordering Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, West Virginia and Maryland. With about 8.8 million people it is 12th in population and 15th in density. Richmond is the capital and Virginia Beach the largest city, while Northern Virginia, including Fairfax County, holds more than a third of residents. The Shenandoah Valley contains the most productive farm counties, Northern Virginia's economy rests on technology firms and federal agencies, and Hampton Roads hosts Naval Station Norfolk. The London Company founded the Colony of Virginia in 1607, the earliest lasting English settlement in the Americas. Virginia ratified the Constitution on June 25, 1788, as the tenth state; during the Civil War it joined the Confederacy, and its northwestern counties split off to form West Virginia in 1863. The General Assembly, founded in 1619, is the oldest continuing legislature in North America.
