Glenn Ivey was born on February 27, 1961, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, and grew up in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, where much of his extended family lived and his mother worked as the first Black teacher at an all-white school.
His family later moved to Dale City, Virginia, after his father took a job with the United States Department of Labor. Ivey graduated with honors from Princeton University with an A.B. in politics in 1983 and received a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1986.
After law school, Glenn Ivey worked for the Baltimore firm Gordon-Feinblatt and, from 1987 to 1988, as an aide to U.S. representative John Conyers.
In 1989 the United States Department of Justice hired him as an assistant U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C., under Eric Holder, and he later served as counsel to Senator Paul Sarbanes during the Whitewater investigations and as chief counsel to Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle until 1998.
Governor Parris Glendening named him chairman of the Maryland Public Service Commission in March 1998.
Ivey was elected state's attorney for Prince George's County in 2002, after defeating Mark Spencer in the primary with 60.0% of the vote, and served two terms from January 2003 to January 2011. He returned to private law practice and opened his own firm, Ivey & Levetown, in Greenbelt in 2020.
After losing the 2016 Democratic primary for the 4th district to Anthony Brown, he won the 2022 primary over former representative Donna Edwards, 51.8% to 35.2%, and was sworn in on January 3, 2023. In the 119th Congress he serves on the Committee on Appropriations and the Committee on Ethics.
Glenn Ivey is seeking re-election in Maryland's 4th congressional district, which covers parts of the Washington, D.C. suburbs in Prince George's County, including Landover, Laurel, and Suitland.
Ivey, who was re-elected with 88.4% of the vote in 2024, won the Democratic primary with 79.2%, ahead of grants specialist Jakeya Johnson at 11.2% and three other candidates.
In the general election on November 3, 2026, he faces Republican George McDermott, an entrepreneur and perennial candidate, along with Green Party candidate Sam Husseini, communications director of the Institute for Public Accuracy.
