Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Greggory D. "Gregg" Hull was born in Oklahoma in 1966 or 1967 and finished high school at Pagosa Springs High School, Colorado. A New Mexico resident for over 35 years, he ran a small business in Rio Rancho before entering city government. Hull and his wife Carrie, married for over 25 years, live in Rio Rancho and are the parents of five and grandparents of eight.

Career

Hull won the Rio Rancho mayoralty in a 2014 runoff and was reelected in 2018 and 2022, becoming the longest-serving mayor in the city's history.

During his tenure Rio Rancho, the third-largest city in New Mexico, grew faster than any other city in the state; Hull doubled the police budget and pursued economic development policies favorable to business.

In November 2025 he announced that he would step aside after three terms to concentrate on his campaign for governor, and his time as mayor ended in April 2026.

2026 race

Hull was the first Republican to signal interest in the 2026 governor's race, doing so in April 2025, and after a statewide listening tour he made his candidacy official in October 2025, emphasizing economic growth and public safety.

He won a clear majority at the Republican pre-primary convention in Ruidoso in March 2026. In the June 2, 2026, Republican primary he took 47% of the vote, defeating Doug Turner and Duke Rodriguez. The office is open because Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is term-limited.

Hull's opponent in the November 3, 2026, general election is Democrat Deb Haaland, a former U.S. Secretary of the Interior, who took 72% in her primary.
