Keisha Lance Bottoms was born Keisha Lance on January 18, 1970, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Sylvia Robinson and the R&B singer Major Lance, and she grew up in the city, graduating from Frederick Douglass High School.
She studied communications with a focus on broadcast journalism at Florida A&M University and in 1994 completed a law degree at Georgia State University College of Law, the year she married Derek W. Bottoms, a fellow law student; the couple adopted four children.
She worked as a prosecutor, represented children in juvenile court, and in 2002 took a seat as an Atlanta magistrate judge.
After an unsuccessful 2008 bid for a Fulton Superior Court judgeship, Bottoms won the Atlanta City Council's District 11 seat in 2009, representing part of southwest Atlanta, and held it from 2010 to 2018 after reelection in 2013.
In the 2017 mayoral election she led the first round with 26% and then won a runoff against council member Mary Norwood, taking office as Atlanta's 60th mayor in 2018. She chose to forgo a second term in 2021.
In January 2021 President Joe Biden nominated her as the Democratic National Committee's vice chair of civic engagement and voter protection, and in June 2022 he named her senior advisor and director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, a post she held into 2023.
On July 14, 2023, Biden appointed her to the President's Export Council. Her memoir, The Rough Side of the Mountain, was published in 2026.
Bottoms announced her campaign for governor on April 4, 2025, seeking the seat held by Republican Brian Kemp, who is term-limited. She won the Democratic nomination outright in the May 19, 2026, primary, avoiding a runoff. In the November 3 general election she faces Republican businessman Rick Jackson, who defeated Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones in the June 16 runoff. Her election would make her the first woman and the first Black person to serve as governor of Georgia.
