Biography & Campaign Analysis
Background
Lisa Demuth was born Lisa Marie Pittman on February 10, 1967, in Paynesville, Minnesota, to a Black father and a white mother, and is a graduate of Bloomington Kennedy High School. She married Nick Demuth in 1991; the couple co-own and manage commercial property, live in Cold Spring and have four children. In 2007 she won election to the Rocori school board through a write-in campaign, and voters returned her to the board twice.
Career
Demuth, a member of the Republican Party of Minnesota, won a seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives in the 2018 election for District 13A, a central Minnesota district taking in St. Joseph, Cold Spring and portions of Stearns County, after former representative Jeff Howe recruited her.
She held an assistant minority leader post during the 2021 to 2022 session, and after the 2022 elections the Republican caucus chose her as minority leader, a post she held between 2023 and 2025 as the first African American to fill it.
When the 94th Minnesota Legislature opened on January 14, 2025, House Republicans elected her speaker while DFL members stayed away; the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled on January 24 that the chamber had lacked a quorum, voiding the vote.
Under a February 5, 2025, agreement between the two parties, she was elected speaker on February 6, the first Black person to hold that office in Minnesota.
2026 race
Demuth declared her candidacy for governor in November 2025, choosing attorney Ryan Wilson for lieutenant governor, and won the Republican caucus straw poll on February 3, 2026. Democratic Governor Tim Walz had sought a third term but withdrew from the race in January, leaving the office open.
Demuth carried the August 11, 2026, Republican primary with 43.4% of the vote, defeating businessman Mike Lindell, who had Donald Trump's endorsement, and Kendall Qualls, a healthcare technology executive endorsed by the state party.
Her opponent in the November 3 general election is Democratic U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, who won her primary with 89.7%.
