Biography & Campaign Analysis
Background
Born Sarah Elizabeth Huckabee in Little Rock, Arkansas, on August 13, 1982, she is the youngest of three children, and the only daughter, of Janet Huckabee and Mike Huckabee, who was governor of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007. She finished Little Rock Central High School and enrolled at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, where students chose her as student body president, and completed a Bachelor of Arts in political science, with a minor in mass communications, in 2004.
Career
Sanders worked on campaigns from an early age, including coordinating field operations for her father's 2002 reelection as governor and for George W. Bush's 2004 reelection effort in Ohio, and she held a congressional liaison post at the U.S. Department of Education.
She was a founding partner of the Little Rock consulting firm Second Street Strategies, national political director of her father's 2008 presidential campaign, manager of John Boozman's 2010 Senate campaign, and senior adviser on Tim Pawlenty's 2012 campaign and Tom Cotton's 2014 campaign.
In 2016 she joined Donald Trump's presidential campaign as a senior adviser.
After serving as deputy press secretary, Sanders became the 31st White House press secretary in July 2017, the third woman in that role, and held it until 2019.
She acted as spokesperson for the administration's policy decisions and held fewer press briefings than any of her 13 predecessors; when questioned by investigators in the Mueller probe, she acknowledged having made false statements as press secretary.
She announced her run for governor of Arkansas on January 25, 2021, with Trump's endorsement, secured her party's nomination in May 2022, and defeated Democrat Chris Jones and Libertarian Ricky Dale Harrington in the general election.
She took office in 2023 as the state's 47th governor and its first female governor.
2026 race
Sanders is running for a second term as governor of Arkansas. She won the Republican nomination unopposed in the primary held on March 3, 2026. Her opponents in the general election on November 3, 2026, are Democratic state senator Fredrick Love, who won his party's primary with 81.0% of the vote, and Libertarian Colt Shelby.
