Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Abraham Hamadeh, whose full name is Abraham Jamal Hamadeh, was born on May 15, 1991, in Chicago, Illinois, and later moved to Phoenix, Arizona. He is the youngest child in a family of Syrian immigrants and grew up in a mixed-faith household with a Muslim father and a Druze mother.

Hamadeh earned his undergraduate degree at Arizona State University and received a Juris Doctor in 2016 from the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona, where the Arizona Prosecuting Attorneys' Advisory Council awarded him the Udall Fellowship.

Career

Abraham Hamadeh began his legal career as an unpaid intern in the office of the Tucson City Prosecutor and, after passing the Arizona Bar Exam in 2016, worked as a prosecutor in the Maricopa County Attorney's Office until he resigned in September 2021.

He has served in the U.S. Army Reserve as an intelligence officer since 2016, reaching the rank of captain, and was deployed to Saudi Arabia in 2020, where he trained members of the Saudi armed forces for 14 months and received a Meritorious Service Medal.

Hamadeh entered politics in November 2021 with a campaign for Arizona attorney general. He won the Republican primary in August 2022 and lost the general election to Democrat Kris Mayes by 280 votes after a recount, then filed a series of lawsuits over the result that the courts rejected.

In October 2023 he announced a campaign for the 8th district after incumbent Debbie Lesko announced her retirement, won a crowded Republican primary that included Blake Masters with just under 30% of the vote, and defeated Democrat Greg Whitten with 56.5% of the vote.

He took office on January 3, 2025, as the first Arab American elected to Congress from Arizona, and he sits on the Committee on Armed Services and the Committee on Veterans' Affairs.

2026 race

Arizona's 8th congressional district is based in the northern and western suburbs of Phoenix, including northern Glendale and Peoria, and Abraham Hamadeh is the Republican incumbent seeking reelection. He was unopposed in the Republican primary, receiving 69,182 votes.

His Democratic opponent is Bernadette Greene-Placentia, a truck driver who won her party's primary with 65.7% of the vote against Raymond Keeler, a software engineer and veteran. Hamadeh and Greene-Placentia meet in the general election on November 3, 2026.
