Biography & Campaign Analysis

2026 race

Bankhead, a Helena-based leadership coach and Air Force lieutenant colonel, is the Democratic nominee for the Montana U.S. Senate seat left open by Republican Steve Daines, who pulled out of the race just before candidates' filing deadline.

She won the June 2, 2026, Democratic primary with 43.7 percent of the vote, ahead of former state representative Reilly Neill and Michael Black Wolf, a tribal historic preservation officer.

In the primary she campaigned on cutting red tape, government accountability and protection of children and older people. Her general election opponents are Republican Kurt Alme, a U.S. Attorney, and independent Seth Bodnar, a former University of Montana president.

As some Democratic leaders urged her to step aside in favor of Bodnar, she kept her candidacy through the August 10 withdrawal deadline.
