Biography & Campaign Analysis
Background
Kurt Gordon Alme was born on October 7, 1966, in Great Falls, Montana, and finished high school at Custer County District High School in Miles City. He went on to complete a business degree at the Boulder campus of the University of Colorado and a law degree at Harvard Law School. He served as a law clerk to Judge Charles C. Lovell on Montana's federal district court and later became a partner at Crowley, Haughey, Hanson, Toole & Dietrich, a law firm.
Career
From 2003 to 2010 Alme was a federal prosecutor in Montana's U.S. Attorney's Office, holding the post of first assistant United States attorney from 2006. He has also served as director of the Montana Department of Revenue.
During the first Trump administration he headed that office as U.S. attorney between 2017 and December 2020. Governor Greg Gianforte named him on January 4, 2021, to lead the state Office of Budget and Program Planning, a post he held until October 1, 2021.
He has also held the roles of president and general counsel at the Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch Foundation. Alme returned to the post of U.S. attorney on March 17, 2025, initially on an interim basis, and resigned in March 2026 to enter the Senate race.
2026 race
The seat is open because Republican senator Steve Daines withdrew from the 2026 contest. Alme filed his candidacy minutes before the March 2026 filing deadline, and Daines withdrew moments later and endorsed him; Gianforte and President Trump also backed Alme.
In the June 2 Republican primary he won the nomination with 76.2%. In the November 3 general election he faces Alani Bankhead, an Air Force officer and the Democratic nominee, and Seth Bodnar, a former University of Montana president running as an independent.
