Career
André Carson began in politics as a Democratic Party committeeperson in Indianapolis. In 2007 he won a special caucus of the Marion County Democratic Party to become the City-County Councilor for the 15th council district, and he served on the council from 2007 to 2008.
After Julia Carson died of lung cancer in December 2007, he won the party's nominating caucus and defeated Republican state representative Jon Elrod and Libertarian Sean Shepard in the special election on March 11, 2008, with 53% of the vote.
He won his first full term in November 2008 with 65% and has retained the seat ever since, most recently defeating Republican John Schmitz in 2024 for a ninth term.
Carson was the second Muslim elected to Congress, after Keith Ellison of Minnesota, and became the dean of Indiana's congressional delegation after Pete Visclosky retired in 2021. In the 119th Congress he serves on the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and the Select Committee on Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party.
2026 race
Indiana's 7th congressional district lies entirely within Marion County and includes most of Indianapolis except the southern side.
André Carson, who was re-elected with 68.3% of the vote in 2024, won the 2026 Democratic primary with 62.4%, defeating lawyer Destiny Wells, the party's 2024 nominee for attorney general, who took 23.4%, along with George Hornedo and Denise Paul Hatch.
In the general election on November 3, 2026, he faces Republican Patrick McAuley, a real estate associate, and Libertarian James Sceniak, who was nominated at his party's convention.
