Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Hank Johnson, born Henry Calvin Johnson Jr. on October 2, 1954, grew up in Washington, D.C. His father worked for the Bureau of Prisons as director of classifications and paroles and was at that time the highest-ranking African American in the bureau.

Johnson earned a Bachelor of Arts from Clark College, now Clark Atlanta University, in 1976, joining the Omega Psi Phi fraternity there.

He received his Juris Doctor from the Texas Southern University Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston in 1979 and went on to practice law in Decatur, Georgia, for more than 25 years.

Career

Before entering Congress, Johnson served as an associate judge of the DeKalb County magistrate's court from 1989 to 2001. He was elected to the DeKalb County Commission in 2000 and served on it from 2001 to 2006.

In 2006 he challenged Representative Cynthia McKinney in the Democratic primary for the 4th district, held her under 50% to force a runoff, and defeated her in the August 8 runoff with 59% of the vote. He then won the November general election against Republican Catherine Davis with 76%.

Johnson has been returned to the House at every election since, running uncontested in 2012 and 2014 and defeating Republican Eugene Yu in 2024. The Democratic Caucus elected him Regional Whip for the Eighth Region in November 2008.

As a member of the House Judiciary Task Force on Judicial Impeachment, he served as an impeachment manager in the trials of judges Samuel B. Kent and Thomas Porteous. On the House Judiciary Committee, he voted in 2019 to approve both articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.

2026 race

Hank Johnson is seeking reelection in Georgia's 4th congressional district, which is based in the southeast suburbs and regions of Atlanta and which he won with 75.6% of the vote in 2024.

In the Democratic primary he defeated businessman Ansel Postell and Ben Truman, a 2020 candidate for the DeKalb County Commission, taking 79.3% of the vote.

His Republican opponent is James Duffie, a veteran and retired executive director for Pure Water Worldwide, who was unopposed for the Republican nomination. The general election takes place on November 3, 2026.
