From 1994 to 2002 he worked on Capitol Hill for U.S. Representative Bob Goodlatte, rising from legislative correspondent to chief of staff.
From 2002 to 2007, a period that included his law school years, he was president of NDS Corporation, a Virginia company providing sales and marketing assistance to rural internet and technology businesses, and he earned a law degree from the University of Richmond School of Law in 2007.
Cline entered the Virginia House of Delegates through a 2002 special election in the 24th district, winning 57% of the vote against Democratic former Lexington mayor Mimi Elrod.
He held the seat through repeated re-elections until 2018, chairing the Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee and co-chairing the Virginia Joint Legislative Conservative Caucus.
Alongside his legislative work, he served as an assistant Commonwealth's Attorney for Rockingham County and the city of Harrisonburg until 2013 and kept a private law practice.
When Goodlatte retired in 2018, Cline won the Republican nomination for the 6th district on the first ballot at the district convention with 52.62% of the vote, ahead of Cynthia Dunbar.
He won the November 6, 2018, general election with 59.8% against Democrat Jennifer Lewis and was re-elected with 64.7% in 2020 and 64.4% in 2022.
In the House he serves on the Committee on Appropriations and the Committee on the Budget, and his caucus memberships include the Freedom Caucus, the Problem Solvers Caucus and the Republican Study Committee.
Ben Cline is seeking re-election in Virginia's 6th congressional district, which runs through the Shenandoah Valley along Interstate 81 and is anchored at its southern end by Roanoke and Salem. He was re-elected in 2024 with 63.1% of the vote and is the Republican nominee again for 2026.
His Democratic opponent is author and journalist Beth Macy, who became the nominee after four other Democratic candidates withdrew. On October 2, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee added the district to its target list. Cline and Macy meet in the general election on November 3, 2026.
