Brenton Awa was born Brenton Patrick Chokei Kawika Awa on February 19, 1986, in Kaʻaʻawa on the island of Oahu, and was raised in Kahalu'u.
He graduated from Kahuku High & Intermediate School in 2004 and earned a degree in speech communication and leadership from Pennsylvania Western University, Clarion, formerly Clarion University of Pennsylvania.
He wrestled in high school and college, and in 2008 he briefly coached Kahuku's junior varsity wrestling team, which won the Oahu Interscholastic Association championship.
Awa began his television news career in January 2009 at KGMB9 News in Honolulu, starting as an intern and moving into associate producer and video journalist roles. KITV hired him as a reporter in 2015 and later promoted him to morning anchor and then evening anchor. The station fired him in July 2021 after he punched a door in the newsroom; he sued over the dismissal and then worked as a substitute teacher at Kahuku High School.
In November 2022 Awa was elected to the Hawaii Senate from the 23rd district, defeating Democratic incumbent Gil Riviere. He was narrowly re-elected in November 2024 and became Senate minority leader.
During his first term he introduced a bill to bar non-United States citizens from purchasing land in Hawaii.
The Hawaiʻi State Ethics Commission fined him in late 2025 following a final ruling over an Instagram video that, the commission said, used official resources to support his then-office manager.
Brenton Awa is the Republican nominee for Hawaii's 2nd congressional district, which covers rural and suburban Oahu and all of the state's other islands. He ran unopposed in the Republican primary. The incumbent is Democrat Jill Tokuda, who was re-elected with 66.5% of the vote in 2024 and won the 2026 Democratic primary with 91.5%. Awa faces Tokuda in the general election on November 3, 2026.
