Ed Case was born Edward Espenett Case on September 27, 1952, in Hilo, the eldest of six children. He graduated from Hawaii Preparatory Academy in Kamuela in 1970 and then spent a year traveling in Australia, where he worked as a jackaroo on a New South Wales sheep station, and in New Zealand. He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Williams College in 1975 and a Juris Doctor from the University of California Hastings College of Law in 1981.
Case worked as a legislative assistant to Spark Matsunaga from 1975 to 1978, clerked for Hawaii Supreme Court Chief Justice William S. Richardson, and joined the Honolulu law firm Carlsmith Ball, where he became a partner in 1989.
He served in the Hawaii House of Representatives from 1994 to 2002, and his Democratic colleagues elected him majority leader in 1999. In 2002 he won a special election to succeed Patsy Mink and went on to represent Hawaii's 2nd congressional district from 2002 to 2007.
His House tenure ended after he unsuccessfully challenged Senator Daniel Akaka in the 2006 Democratic primary, and he lost the 2012 Senate primary to Mazie Hirono.
Case returned to Congress in January 2019 after winning the 1st district in 2018, when he took 40% in a crowded Democratic primary and 73.1% in the general election. He rejoined the Blue Dog Coalition that month. In the 119th Congress he sits on the Committee on Appropriations, including its subcommittees on defense and homeland security.
Ed Case is seeking re-election in Hawaii's 1st congressional district, which lies entirely on the island of Oahu and centers on Honolulu; he was re-elected with 71.8% of the vote in 2024.
In the Democratic primary on August 8, 2026, he won renomination with 58.5% of the vote against state senator Jarrett Keohokalole, who took 37.4%. His Republican opponent is Adriel Lam, a 2024 candidate for the U.S. Senate who was unopposed in his party's primary.
