Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Bruce Arthur Blakeman was born on October 2, 1955, in Valley Stream, New York. His father, Assemblyman Robert M. Blakeman, was a merchant mariner and later a Naval Reserve officer, and his mother, Betty, was a veteran of the Women's Army Corps.

After Valley Stream Central High School, he completed a political science and government degree at Arizona State University and a law degree at the California Western School of Law.

During his studies he worked on Republican campaigns and was at one point Nancy Reagan's driver; after passing the bar he joined his father's law firm as a partner.

Career

Blakeman served on the Hempstead Town Council from 1993 to 1995. When the Nassau County Legislature replaced the county's Board of Supervisors, he won its 7th district seat in November 1995 and became the body's first presiding officer, serving until his defeat by Jeff Toback in 1999.

As the Republican candidate for state comptroller in 1998, he lost to Democrat Carl McCall. From June 2001 to 2009 he sat on the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as a commissioner appointed by Governor George Pataki.

He lost the 2010 Republican Senate primary to Joe DioGuardi and, in 2014, lost the race for New York's 4th congressional district to Democrat Kathleen Rice, 53% to 47%. He returned to the Hempstead Town Council by appointment in January 2015.

In the 2021 election for Nassau County executive, Blakeman defeated Democratic incumbent Laura Curran with 50.35% of the vote, becoming the county's 10th executive and its first Jewish one. He won reelection in November 2025 against Democrat Seth Koslow.

2026 race

Blakeman launched his campaign for governor on December 9, 2025. After Representative Elise Stefanik left the Republican contest on December 19, President Donald Trump endorsed him the following day, and the state Conservative Party backed him at its February 2026 convention, giving him both ballot lines under the state's fusion voting system. He faces Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, who is seeking a second full term, in the November 3 general election.
