Dale Strong, whose full name is Dale Whitney Strong, was born on May 8, 1970, in Monrovia, Alabama, to Horace N. Strong, a founding member of the Monrovia Fire-Rescue Department, and Judy Vaughn Strong.
He began service as a volunteer firefighter at age 13 and graduated from Sparkman High School in 1988. Strong earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Athens State University and an emergency medical technician license from the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
Before entering politics he worked in public relations for First Alabama Bank, as a sales representative for Solvay S.A., and as a first responder and 911 dispatcher for HEMSI and Huntsville Med-Flight. He married Laura Toney in 1999, and they have two children.
Dale Strong's political career began in 1996, when he was elected to the Madison County Commission for its fourth district and became the youngest elected Republican official in Alabama at the time.
He won the Republican primary for the commission chairmanship against former congressional candidate Wayne Parker and in November 2012 became the first Republican elected chair of the Madison County Commission.
During his chairmanship, which lasted from 2012 to 2023, he was involved in recruiting federal agencies, including NASA and the FBI, to Redstone Arsenal.
When incumbent Mo Brooks retired to run for the U.S. Senate, Strong sought the 5th district seat in 2022. He won the June 21 runoff against Casey Wardynski with about 63% of the vote and defeated Democrat Kathy Warner-Stanton with about 67% in the general election. In the 119th Congress he serves on the Committee on Appropriations and the Committee on Homeland Security, where he chairs the Subcommittee on Emergency Management and Technology.
Dale Strong is the Republican nominee in the 2026 election for Alabama's 5th congressional district, which is based in northern Alabama and includes Huntsville, Athens, Decatur, Madison and Scottsboro.
Strong, the incumbent, was re-elected unopposed in 2024 and secured the Republican nomination again in 2026.
In the November 3, 2026, general election he faces Democrat Andrew Sneed, a mechanical contractor who won the Democratic nomination in a runoff against tech product analyst Candice Duvieilh with 78.4% of the vote.
