Political landscape in Alabama

Overview

Alabama lies in the Southeastern United States and the Deep South. Its neighbors are Tennessee on the north, Georgia on the east and Mississippi on the west, while the Gulf of Mexico and Florida form its southern edge. The state ranks 30th among the 50 states by area and 24th by population. Montgomery is the capital, Huntsville is the largest city by both population and area, and Mobile, established by French colonists in 1702, is the oldest city; Greater Birmingham forms the largest metropolitan area and the main economic hub. The territory passed through Spanish, French and British control before Alabama gained statehood in December 1819. It seceded in 1861 to join the Confederacy and returned to the Union in 1868, and protests including the Selma to Montgomery marches put the state at the heart of the civil rights struggle. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center opened in Huntsville in 1960 and helped create an aerospace sector, and the modern economy spans automotive manufacturing, finance, tourism, aerospace, mining, healthcare and technology.
