Dan Koh was born on January 1, 1985, to doctors Howard K. Koh and Claudia A. Arrigg, the middle of three children; his father later served as U.S. Assistant Secretary for Health under President Barack Obama.
His uncle, Harold Hongju Koh, was dean of Yale Law School and Legal Adviser of the Department of State. Koh graduated from Phillips Academy, earned a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University and received a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School.
He is married to Amy Sennett, a lecturer in law at Columbia Law School, and the couple have two children.
After a stint as chief of staff to Arianna Huffington, Koh became chief of staff to Boston Mayor Marty Walsh at the age of 29.
He left the Walsh administration to run in the 2018 Democratic primary for Massachusetts's 3rd congressional district, which he lost to Lori Trahan by 145 votes, receiving 18,435 votes to her 18,580.
In 2019 he was elected to the Andover Board of Selectmen with 2,733 votes, more than any other candidate, and he resigned in February 2021 to join the Biden administration.
In 2021 Walsh, by then U.S. Secretary of Labor, named Koh as his chief of staff. Koh later served as Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Cabinet Secretary at the White House, and he concluded his service as Deputy Assistant to the President and deputy director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, a post he held from 2022 to 2025.
The 6th district covers northeastern Massachusetts, including Salem, Peabody and Gloucester, and its seat is open because Democratic incumbent Seth Moulton declared his candidacy for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Senator Ed Markey. Koh announced his campaign for the seat in October 2025.
He won the Democratic primary on September 1, 2026, with 40.9% of the vote, ahead of state representative Tram Nguyen with 29.4%, lawyer and business executive John Beccia with 12.2% and Topsfield Town Moderator Jamie Belsito with 9.6%.
In the general election on November 3, 2026, he faces Republican Micah Jones, an attorney and U.S. Army veteran.
