Political landscape in Massachusetts

Overview

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts lies in New England, with the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Maine on its east, New Hampshire and Vermont on its north, New York on its west and Connecticut and Rhode Island on its south. It ranks seventh smallest in land area and 16th in population, the highest in New England, with the third-highest population density in the country. Boston is the capital and largest city, and Worcester, Springfield and Cambridge are other major cities. The Pilgrims founded Plymouth Colony in 1620, the Massachusetts Bay Colony settled Boston in 1630, and the American Revolution began in the colony; Massachusetts was admitted as the sixth state on February 6, 1788. Manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution gave way to services in the 20th century, and the state now leads the world in biotechnology, with strengths in higher education, engineering, artificial intelligence and finance. Harvard University and MIT, both in Cambridge, hold places among the world's top academic institutions.

Officeholders

As of October 2026, the governor of Massachusetts is Maura Healey (Democratic), and the state's US senators are Elizabeth Warren (Democratic) and Ed Markey (Democratic).
