Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Diana Harshbarger, whose full name is Diana Lynn Harshbarger, was born on January 1, 1960, in Kingsport, Tennessee, and raised in nearby Bloomingdale. She was the first person in her family to graduate from high school. Harshbarger attended East Tennessee State University and earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from Mercer University. She has been a licensed pharmacist since 1987, and she and her husband, Bob, operate Premier Pharmacy, a compounding pharmacy.

Career

In 2020, after six-term Republican incumbent Phil Roe opted to retire from Tennessee's 1st congressional district, Harshbarger announced her candidacy to succeed him.

She won the 17-candidate Republican primary on August 5 and defeated Democratic nominee Blair Walsingham in the November general election.

Her campaign focused on the opioid crisis, anti-abortion legislation and religious freedom, and highlighted American dependence on Chinese pharmaceutical imports as a national security issue. When she took office on January 3, 2021, she became the fifth woman elected to Congress from Tennessee.

Harshbarger won re-election in 2022 and 2024. In the 119th Congress she serves on the Committee on Energy and Commerce, including its Subcommittee on Energy, its Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations and its Subcommittee on Health, of which she is vice chair.

She is a member of the Freedom Caucus and the Republican Study Committee, and she is the only woman in Tennessee's House delegation. Harshbarger considered a run for governor of Tennessee in 2026, saying she would run only if Senator Marsha Blackburn stayed out of the race.

2026 race

Diana Harshbarger is seeking re-election in the 1st district, which is based in northeast Tennessee, includes the Tri-Cities region and encompasses Carter, Cocke, Greene, Hamblen, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington counties along with parts of Jefferson and Sevier counties.

She was re-elected with 78.1% of the vote in 2024 and won the 2026 Republican primary with 100.0% of the vote.

In the general election on November 3, 2026, she faces Democrat Kristi Burke, an artist and YouTuber who won the Democratic primary with 76.6% of the vote against Marine Corps veteran David Kerr and small business owner Herman Garcia.
