Career

Johnny Garrett began practicing law in Sumner County in 2006, representing businesses and entrepreneurs.

When Courtney Rogers, who held the 45th district seat in the Tennessee House of Representatives, announced her retirement in 2018, Garrett won the Republican primary to replace her and defeated Democrat Hana Ali in the general election with nearly 70% of the vote.

He was sworn into office in January 2019, and his House colleagues elected him majority whip for the 2020 legislative session. The district he represents is based in the northern suburbs of Nashville.

In 2023 Garrett co-sponsored a resolution to expel Democratic lawmakers from the legislature for violating decorum rules.

2026 race

Tennessee's 6th congressional district covers the eastern portions and suburbs of Nashville and extends across northern Middle Tennessee, from Hendersonville and Gallatin east across the Cumberland Plateau to Cookeville, Crossville and Scott County.

The seat is open because the Republican incumbent, John Rose, who was re-elected with 68.0% of the vote in 2024, is retiring to run for governor.

Johnny Garrett won the Republican nomination over a field that included educator Natisha Brooks, Jon Henry and Van Hilleary, chief of staff to Rose and a former U.S. representative from the 4th district.

In the general election on November 3, 2026, Garrett faces Democrat Mike Croley, who won his party's primary with 28.9% of the vote.
