Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Gordon Douglas Jones was born on May 4, 1954, in Fairfield, Alabama, to Gordon Jones, a U.S. Steel employee, and Gloria (Wesson) Jones, and attended Fairfield High School.

He completed a political science degree at the University of Alabama in 1976 and earned his law degree in 1979 from Samford University's Cumberland School of Law.

He began as a Judiciary Committee staff counsel for Senator Howell Heflin, spent 1980 to 1984 as a federal prosecutor, and then practiced law privately in Birmingham until 1997. In 1988 he successfully defended Tom Posey, a Ku Klux Klan supporter alleged to have taken part in the Iran–Contra affair.

Career

From 1997 to 2001 Jones was the U.S. attorney for Alabama's Northern District, appointed by President Bill Clinton.

In that office he obtained indictments in 2000 against Klan members Thomas Edwin Blanton Jr. and Bobby Frank Cherry for the 1963 bombing of Birmingham's 16th Street Baptist Church, which killed four African-American girls; both received life sentences.

He also coordinated the task force after Eric Rudolph's 1998 bombing of a Birmingham clinic, and Rudolph was indicted.

When Jeff Sessions left the Senate in 2017 to become attorney general, Jones won the Democratic nomination for the special election and defeated Republican Roy Moore on December 12, 2017, by 50.0% to 48.3%.

He served from January 3, 2018, to January 3, 2021, and lost his 2020 bid for a full term to Republican Tommy Tuberville, 60% to 40%. As of 2026, Jones is the last Democrat elected to, or serving in, any statewide office in Alabama.

After leaving the Senate he became a CNN commentator in January 2021, held fellowships at Georgetown University and the University of Chicago, and in 2022 guided the Supreme Court nomination of Ketanji Brown Jackson for the Biden administration.

2026 race

Jones launched his campaign for governor on November 24, 2025, and won the Democratic primary on May 19, 2026. Republican Governor Kay Ivey is term-limited, leaving the office open, and Jones faces Tuberville again in the November 3 general election in a rematch of their 2020 Senate contest.
