Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Joe Mitchell was born Joseph Paul Mitchell on April 23, 1997, to John and Jean Mitchell, the former owners of the medical device manufacturer MD Orthopaedics in Wayland.

He graduated from Waco High School a semester early in December 2014 and served as a legislative page at the Iowa State Capitol in January 2015. Mitchell then earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Drake University in 2018.

He owns and operates a real estate company based in Clear Lake that develops housing for rural communities, and he founded Run Gen Z, a nonprofit whose stated mission is to prepare Generation Z leaders and support conservative political values.

Career

Joe Mitchell won an open seat in the Iowa House of Representatives in 2018 by a margin of 61% to 39% and, sworn in at the age of 21, became the youngest person ever elected to the chamber.

He served as a House Assistant Leader, sat on committees including Commerce, Judiciary, and Ways and Means, and was re-elected with 71% of the vote in 2020.

In 2022, after redistricting placed his home and that of fellow state Representative Jeff Shipley in the same district, Mitchell lost to Shipley in the Republican primary. He became a resident fellow at Harvard University in 2023 and joined President-elect Donald Trump's transition team in late 2024.

After Trump's inauguration in January 2025, Mitchell worked as chief of staff at the Federal Housing Finance Agency, and in late July 2025 he was appointed Regional Administrator for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Great Plains Region.

2026 race

Iowa's 2nd congressional district is based in northeastern Iowa and contains the cities of Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, and Dubuque. The seat is open because Republican incumbent Ashley Hinson, who was re-elected with 57.1% of the vote in 2024, is running for the U.S. Senate.

Joe Mitchell announced his candidacy in September 2025 and won the Republican nomination, defeating state senator Charlie McClintock in the primary after former U.S. Representative Rod Blum and state Representative Shannon Lundgren withdrew.

In the general election on November 3, 2026, he faces Democrat Lindsay James, a state representative from the 71st district, and independent candidate Dave Bushaw, a community organizer.
