Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Keith Self was born on March 20, 1953, at a military hospital in Philadelphia. He graduated from Tascosa High School in Amarillo, Texas, and went on to the United States Military Academy, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering in 1975. Self is married to Tracy Groff.

Career

Keith Self served in the United States Army from 1975 to 1999, including time in the Army Special Forces and Army Rangers, with deployments to Qatar, Egypt, Germany, Afghanistan and Belgium. In 2002 he ran to replace retiring U.S. representative Dick Armey and missed the runoff by 93 votes. He was then recalled to active duty from 2002 to 2003 and retired as a lieutenant colonel. Self later served three terms as county judge of Collin County, Texas, from 2007 to 2018.

His route to Congress opened in 2022, when he finished second to incumbent Van Taylor in the March Republican primary for the 3rd district and advanced to a runoff.

Taylor then ended his campaign amid accusations of marital infidelity, which gave Self the nomination, and Self won the November general election. During the January 2023 speaker election he first voted for Jim Jordan and Byron Donalds before switching to Kevin McCarthy.

Self sits on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on Veterans' Affairs and belongs to the Freedom Caucus and the Republican Study Committee.

In December 2025 he and Chip Roy announced the Sharia Free America Caucus, and in June 2026 he introduced a resolution to repeal the Seventeenth Amendment.

2026 race

Keith Self is seeking another term in Texas's 3rd congressional district, which takes in much of Collin County and Hunt County in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, including eastern Plano, McKinney, Allen, Wylie and Greenville. He was re-elected with 62.5% of the vote in 2024.

In the 2026 Republican primary he defeated U.S. Army veteran Mark Newgent, taking 80.2% of the vote. His opponent in the general election on November 3, 2026, is Democrat Evan Hunt, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel who was the only candidate in the Democratic primary.
