Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Kim Schrier was born on August 23, 1968, and raised in Los Angeles, California, where she graduated from Palisades Charter High School.

She earned a bachelor's degree in astrophysics from the University of California, Berkeley, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of California Davis School of Medicine, followed by a residency at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

Her grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Europe who arrived in the United States before World War II. She lives in Sammamish, Washington, with her husband, David Gowing, and their son, and she has Type 1 diabetes.

Career

Schrier began her career as a pediatrician in Ashland, Oregon, and joined Virginia Mason Medical Center in Issaquah, Washington, in 2001.

Her dissatisfaction with Congressman Dave Reichert's handling of efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act led her to enter politics in 2017, and the seat became open when Reichert announced his retirement that September.

In 2018 she defeated Republican Dino Rossi with 52% of the vote, becoming the first Democrat elected to represent the district, and she was sworn in on January 3, 2019.

Schrier won re-election against Republican Jesse Jensen in 2020 with 51.7% of the vote, against Matt Larkin in 2022 with 53.3%, and against Carmen Goers in 2024 with 54.0%. In the 119th Congress she serves on the Committee on Energy and Commerce and its subcommittees on health, on energy, and on commerce, manufacturing, and trade. She co-chairs the Congressional Doctors Caucus and chairs the Farm Bill Task Force of the New Democrat Coalition.

2026 race

Kim Schrier is seeking re-election in Washington's 8th congressional district, which is based in the eastern suburbs of Seattle, including Sammamish, Issaquah and Maple Valley, and takes in areas east of the Cascades such as Wenatchee, Leavenworth and Ellensburg.

She was re-elected with 54.0% of the vote in 2024. In the 2026 top-two primary, Schrier placed first with 102,853 votes, or 53.7%, and Republican Spencer Meline, a small business owner, finished second with 15.8%, narrowly ahead of Republican Trinh Ha at 14.8%.

Schrier and Meline meet in the general election on November 3, 2026.
