Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Lisa McClain was born Lisa Carmella Iovannisci on April 7, 1966, and was raised in Stockbridge, Michigan. She graduated from Stockbridge Junior / Senior High School in 1984, attended Lansing Community College, and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Northwood University.

Before entering politics she worked at American Express for 11 years and at the Hantz Group from 1998 to 2019. She and her husband, Michael, have four children and live in Romeo, an outer northern suburb of Detroit.

Career

Lisa McClain entered Congress after Representative Paul Mitchell chose to retire from Michigan's 10th congressional district in 2020. She defeated state Representative Shane Hernandez in the August 4 Republican primary and Democratic nominee Kimberly Bizon in the November 3 general election. In 2022 she won the redrawn 9th district with 63.9% of the vote, and in 2024 she was re-elected with 66.8% against Clinton St. Mosley and two third-party candidates.

Following the 2024 election, House Republicans elected McClain chair of the House Republican Conference, making her the fourth-ranking House Republican behind Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Majority Whip Tom Emmer, and the highest-ranking Republican woman in the House.

Her committee assignments have included Armed Services, the Budget, Education and the Workforce, and Oversight and Accountability, where she chaired the Subcommittee on Health Care and Financial Services.

In December 2023 she sponsored a resolution to censure Representative Jamaal Bowman for pulling a fire alarm, which passed by a vote of 214 to 191.

2026 race

Lisa McClain is seeking another term in Michigan's 9th congressional district, which covers The Thumb region, including Port Huron, and the northern Detroit exurbs in Oakland and Macomb counties.

She was renominated without opposition, taking 100.0% of the vote in the Republican primary after landscaping contractor Daltson Atwell withdrew to run for the state senate. Her Democratic opponent is Ray Pooley, a CNC machinist and programmer who was also unopposed in his primary.

Libertarian Kevin Vayko, Constitution Party candidate John Vlahos, Green Party candidate Destiny Clayton and Working Class Party candidate Jim Walkowicz are also on the ballot for the general election on November 3, 2026.
