Political landscape in Michigan
Overview
Michigan is an Upper Midwest state on the Great Lakes with land or water borders touching Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Ontario in Canada. It is the tenth most populous state, 11th in area, and the biggest state, measured by total area, lying east of the Mississippi River. Lansing is the capital and Detroit the largest city; Grand Rapids, Flint, Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo are other major metro areas. The state consists of the forested Upper Peninsula and the more populous Lower Peninsula, joined by the Mackinac Bridge, and it touches four Great Lakes, giving it the longest freshwater shoreline of any US subdivision. French explorers took possession of the region for New France before British and then American control; Michigan Territory was organized in 1805, and statehood came on January 26, 1837, with Michigan as the 26th state. In the early 20th century Michigan gained wide recognition as the hub of American automaking, and the three major US automobile companies are headquartered in Metro Detroit.
