Biography & Campaign Analysis
Background
Loranne Ausley was born on October 16, 1963, into a politically active Florida family: her great-great-grandfather, Alexander McSwain, was a state representative in 1891, and her grandfather, Charles Ausley, was a Florida state senator. Her father, DuBose Ausley, is a Tallahassee attorney who chaired the State University System of Florida. She earned a Bachelor of Arts at Randolph-Macon Woman's College in 1985 and a J.D. at Washington & Lee University in 1990.
Career
From 2000 to 2008 Ausley held a Tallahassee seat in the Florida House, with a district covering the northern half of Leon County and part of Jefferson County, and in 2007 and 2008 she was the ranking Democrat on the House Health Care Council.
In 2010 she was the Democratic nominee for Florida Chief Financial Officer, after no other candidate filed, and lost the general election to Republican Jeff Atwater, then president of the state Senate.
She won back a seat in the Florida House in 2016, for the 9th district, and served until 2020, when she won the 3rd district seat in the Florida Senate, succeeding term-limited Bill Montford and defeating Republican Marva Preston 53.4% to 46.6%.
That Senate district spanned 11 counties, Leon among them. Republican Corey Simon defeated her in the 2022 election. She holds a senior advisory role at the Lawton Chiles Foundation and chairs the Florida Healthy Kids Corporation's board.
2026 race
Ausley is a declared candidate for mayor of Tallahassee in 2026, an open race because incumbent John E. Dailey, first elected in 2018, announced he would not seek reelection. The first round was held on August 18, 2026, and since no candidate won a majority, a runoff is set for November 3, 2026.
