Biography & Campaign Analysis
Background
Rogers was born on June 2, 1963, in Livonia, Michigan, and spent his early childhood in nearby Redford Township before his family settled in Brighton Township. He completed Howell High School in 1981 and Adrian College in 1985, earning a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and sociology. His Army service ran from 1985 to 1989, and from 1989 to 1994 he was a special agent in the Chicago office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation on organized crime and public corruption.
Career
Rogers won election to the Michigan Senate in 1994 and a second term in 1998 with 68% of the vote, representing Clinton, Livingston, and Shiawassee counties.
In 2000 he won the seat for Michigan's 8th congressional district by 111 votes over Democratic State Senator Dianne Byrum, and he represented the district in the U.S. House from 2001 to 2015.
From 2011 to 2015 he chaired the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and in 2011 he introduced the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act.
After Congress he worked in cybersecurity, joined CNN in 2015 as a national security commentator, and hosted the syndicated program Something to Think About with Mike Rogers.
In August 2023 Rogers entered the race for the U.S. Senate seat of retiring Democrat Debbie Stabenow. He took the Republican primary on August 6, 2024, with more than 60% of the vote and lost the general election to Democrat Elissa Slotkin by fewer than 20,000 votes.
2026 race
Rogers announced on April 14, 2025, a run for Michigan's other Senate seat, held by Democrat Gary Peters, who is leaving after two terms.
Donald Trump endorsed him, and his only significant primary rival, Bernadette Smith, was disqualified by the Board of State Canvassers for submitting too few signatures, which left Rogers as the sole candidate on the Republican ballot; he won the primary on August 4, 2026.
His Democratic opponent in the general election of November 3 is Abdul El-Sayed, a former Wayne County health director who defeated Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary.
