Roger Wayne Marshall was born on August 9, 1960, in El Dorado, Kansas, into a family that had farmed for five generations, and he belonged to the first generation of that family to attend college.
He studied at Butler Community College, then completed a biochemistry degree at Kansas State University and a medical degree at the University of Kansas, followed by an obstetrics and gynecology residency at St. Petersburg, Florida's Bayfront Medical Center.
He practiced obstetrics for more than 25 years; in 1998 he joined eight other physicians in opening Great Bend Regional Medical Center, and he owned Heartland Regional OBGYN from 1998 to 2012 and co-owned it from 2013 to 2019.
He was also a vice president of Farmers Bank and Trust, a Rotary International district governor, and reached the rank of captain during seven years of service in the Army Reserve.
In the August 2, 2016, Republican primary for the 1st congressional district of Kansas, a largely rural seat spanning western and northern Kansas, Marshall unseated incumbent Tim Huelskamp, 56% to 44%, and he took the general election with 65.9%. He won a second House term in 2018.
When Senator Pat Roberts retired, Marshall entered the 2020 Senate race, won the Republican primary with 40.3% over Kris Kobach and Bob Hamilton, and beat Barbara Bollier, a Democratic state senator, 53% to 42%.
He took office on January 3, 2021, and sits on the Senate committees on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry; Finance; Budget; and Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.
Marshall is running for a second term in the November 3, 2026, election. He won the Republican nomination with little opposition in the August 4 primary. His Democratic opponent is pastor Adam Hamilton, who won his party's primary with 34.9% in a field that included Christy Davis and Noah Taylor.
