Political landscape in Kansas

Overview

Kansas is a landlocked Midwestern state bordered by Nebraska, Colorado, Oklahoma and Missouri, and it is often described as the geographic midpoint of the lower forty-eight states. It takes its name from the Kansas River and the Kansa people. Topeka is the capital, Wichita has the largest population of any city, and the Kansas City metro area, which spans the Missouri line, forms the biggest urban area. Settlement grew quickly after the Kansas–Nebraska Act of 1854, which set off the Bleeding Kansas conflict between abolitionist and pro-slavery settlers; Kansas was admitted as a free state on January 29, 1861. The Homestead Acts of 1862 brought more settlers, and the cattle trade boomed in the 1870s. Covering 82,278 square miles, it is 15th in area, and as of 2015 it ranked among the most productive farm states for wheat, corn, sorghum and soybeans, with a large aerospace industry as well.

Officeholders

As of October 2026, Governor Laura Kelly is a Democrat, and the state's US senators, Jerry Moran and Roger Marshall, are Republicans.

2026 elections

On November 3, 2026, Kansas voters will decide a US Senate race and the governor's race, elect members in all four House districts, and vote on a measure requiring US citizenship to vote.
