While working with the Vine Neighborhood Association, Sean McCann was elected to the Kalamazoo city commission in 1999 and served on it for ten years. He was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2010, defeating Republican Jeff Fernandez, and represented the 60th district.

In 2013 he proposed an independent commission to draw legislative districts in the state as a measure against gerrymandering, and he also worked for the Kalamazoo Red Cross.

In 2014 he ran for the 20th district seat in the Michigan Senate against Republican Margaret O'Brien and Libertarian Lorence Wenke, losing to O'Brien after a recount widened her margin from 59 votes to 61.

He won the seat in a 2018 rematch, receiving 60,523 votes to O'Brien's 48,197, and he now represents the 19th district.

The 4th district is based in southwestern Michigan and includes the cities of Kalamazoo and Holland.

Sean McCann won the Democratic primary with 65.67% of the vote, defeating Diop Harris, a former legislative correspondent for U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, after attorney Jessica Swartz, the party's 2024 nominee, withdrew to run for the state house.

In the general election on November 3, 2026, he faces Republican incumbent Bill Huizenga, who has served in the U.S. House since 2011 and won renomination with 85.13%, and Green Party candidate Shafina Che Barnett.
