Career

He also ran for mayor in 2007 and 2009, losing both times in the nonpartisan primary. Winning the 34th district seat in the Michigan House of Representatives in 2014 with more than 90% of the general election vote, he won again in 2016 and 2018 and sat in the House from 2015 to 2019.
His wife, Cynthia, won the seat after he left it.
In the 2019 mayoral race Neeley advanced from the August 6 primary and defeated incumbent Karen Weaver in the November 5 general election by 7,082 votes to 6,877, resigning his House seat to take office. That first term ran three years. In 2022, with the endorsement of Governor Whitmer of Michigan, he led the August 2 primary with 48.8% and defeated Weaver again in November, 11,692 votes to 10,411.
