Political landscape in Vermont

Overview

Vermont is a landlocked New England state. Massachusetts borders it on the south, New Hampshire on the east, New York on the west and Quebec in Canada on the north. With an estimated 644,663 residents it is the second-least populous state, and it is the sixth smallest by total area. Montpelier is the least populous state capital in the country, and Burlington is the largest city. Abenaki and Mohawk peoples lived in the region when Europeans arrived, and France claimed it until 1763. Settlers holding New Hampshire land grants created the independent Vermont Republic in 1777, the first in the country to abolish slavery, and Vermont joined the Union as the 14th state in 1791. The Green Mountains run north to south through the center of the state, and forests cover most of its land. In 2022 Vermont's total economic output ranked last among the states, though it placed 21st in GDP per capita; maple syrup, dairy, forestry and wine are important sectors of its farm economy, and it produces about half of the nation's maple syrup.
