Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Ayanna Pressley was born on February 3, 1974, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up on the north side of Chicago, Illinois. Her mother, Sandra Pressley, worked multiple jobs to support the family and was a community organizer for the Chicago Urban League, advocating for tenants' rights.

Pressley attended Francis W. Parker School, where she was a competitive debater and her class's commencement speaker.

From 1992 to 1994 she attended the College of General Studies at Boston University, then left to take a full-time job at the Boston Marriott Copley Place to support her mother, and she later took courses at Boston University Metropolitan College.

Career

Pressley began her political career as a district representative for U.S. Representative Joseph P. Kennedy II, later becoming his scheduler and constituency director, and then worked as political director and senior aide to Senator John Kerry.

Elected to the Boston City Council in November 2009, she was sworn in on January 4, 2010, as the first woman of color to serve in the council's 100-year history, and she served as an at-large member until 2019.

On the council she founded the Committee on Healthy Women, Families, and Communities and, with Councilor Michelle Wu, sponsored the 2017 Equity in City of Boston Contracts Ordinance.

In the September 4, 2018, Democratic primary for the 7th district, Pressley defeated ten-term incumbent Mike Capuano by 59% to 41%, and she won the general election unopposed, becoming the first black woman elected to Congress from Massachusetts. She was re-elected in 2020, 2022 and 2024.

Pressley is a member of "The Squad", an informal group of progressive members of Congress, and she serves on the Committee on Financial Services and the Committee on Oversight and Accountability.

2026 race

The 7th district covers much of Boston and its suburbs, and Pressley, the incumbent, was re-elected uncontested in 2024. In the 2026 Democratic primary she received 74,100 votes, or 98.4%, to secure renomination. She is the Democratic nominee in the general election on November 3, 2026.
