Background
Lois Frankel was born to a Jewish family on May 16, 1948, in New York City. She received a bachelor's degree from Boston University in 1970 and a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center in 1973, and she moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, in 1974.
Career
Lois Frankel's political career began in 1986, when she won an open seat in the Florida House of Representatives, defeating Republican Gerald Adams 69% to 31%.
She resigned in November 1991 to run for Congress, lost the 1992 Democratic runoff for the newly created 23rd district to Alcee Hastings, and returned to the state House in 1994.
Over fourteen years in the chamber she became the first female House Minority Leader in Florida's history, leaving in 2002 because of term limits. She was elected mayor of West Palm Beach in 2003, defeating incumbent Joel T. Daves III, and served two terms until 2011.
Frankel won Florida's 22nd congressional district in 2012, defeating Republican Adam Hasner 54.7% to 45.3%. After a Florida Supreme Court-ordered redistricting her district was renumbered the 21st in 2016, and she has represented the 22nd again since 2023. In the 119th Congress she sits on the Committee on Appropriations, where she is ranking member of the Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs, and she chairs the Elect Democratic Women PAC.
