Biography & Campaign Analysis
Background
Bobby Pulido, born Jose Roberto Pulido Jr. on April 25, 1973, in Edinburg, Texas, is the oldest child of Tejano music singer Roberto Pulido and Diana Montez, daughter of norteño musician Mario Montez of Los Donneños.
He attended Edinburg High School, where he joined the school's mariachi ensemble, and later played saxophone and sang backup in his father's band, Los Clásicos. Pulido was accepted at St. Mary's University to study political science, but he left college to pursue a singing career.
He married Eliza Anzaldua in July 1996 and had three sons with her before filing for divorce in 2013. He married Mariana Morales in November 2018, and his fourth son was born in December 2019.
Career
Pulido formed his own band and signed with EMI Latin in May 1995, releasing his debut album, Desvelado, that September. The album reached number nine on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart and was certified platinum by the RIAA.
Between 1998 and 2000 he was named Male Entertainer of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards three years in a row.
After Tejano music's popularity waned in the 2000s, he made his acting debut in 2003 in La Decada Furiosa and later appeared in telenovelas, including Fuego en la sangre and Qué pobres tan ricos. Pulido won the Latin Grammy for Best Tejano Album in 2022 for Para Que Baile Mi Pueblo and again in 2025.
In November 2024 he announced his retirement from music to pursue politics, following a farewell tour that began in January 2025.
2026 race
Pulido announced on September 17, 2025, that he would run as a Democrat in Texas's 15th congressional district, which for 2026 stretches from Hidalgo County in the Rio Grande Valley northeast into rural counties between Corpus Christi, San Antonio and Victoria.
He won the Democratic primary with 67.5% of the vote against physician Ada Cuellar. In the general election on November 3, 2026, he faces Republican Monica De La Cruz, the incumbent U.S. representative, who was unopposed in her primary and was re-elected with 57.1% of the vote in 2024.
