2026 race

Alex Mealer, a METRO board member and the Republican nominee for Harris County judge in 2022, is the Republican nominee in 2026 for Texas's 9th congressional district.

Redistricting relocated the district from southern Houston to the eastern portions of the Houston area, and its previous incumbent, Democrat Al Green, ran for reelection in the newly redrawn 18th district.

The new district covers east and southeast Houston neighborhoods along with Pasadena, Baytown, Deer Park and La Porte, and has a 58.6% Hispanic voting age population.

Mealer led a nine-candidate Republican primary with 35.8% of the vote, ahead of state representative Briscoe Cain and former U.S. representative Steve Stockman, and then defeated Cain in the runoff with 68.3%.

In the general election on November 3, 2026, Mealer faces Democrat Leticia Gutierrez, an environmental justice advocate.
