Biography & Campaign Analysis
Background
Byron Lowell Donalds was born on October 28, 1978, and grew up in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, New York, one of three children raised by a single mother; his heritage is Jamaican and Panamanian.
He finished Nazareth Regional High School in East Flatbush in 1996, began college at Florida A&M University, and transferred to Florida State University, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts in finance and marketing in 2002.
His working career was in banking, insurance and finance: he joined TIB Bank as a credit analyst in 2003 and rose through several credit management posts, moved in 2007 to CMG Surety LLC as a portfolio manager, and became a financial advisor at Wells Fargo Advisors in 2015.
Career
Donalds left the Democratic Party for the Republican Party in 2010 and became active in the Tea Party movement. He ran for Florida's 19th congressional district in 2012, finishing fifth in a field of six. In 2016 he won election to the Florida House of Representatives from District 80, serving two terms to 2020 and chairing the Insurance and Banking Subcommittee.
When Representative Francis Rooney retired in 2020, Donalds won a nine-candidate Republican primary for the 19th district, edging state representative Dane Eagle by 770 votes, and then defeated Democrat Cindy Banyai in November. He was sworn in on January 3, 2021, and won reelection in 2022 and 2024.
In his second term, colleagues nominated him during the January 2023 speakership balloting, where he drew 20 votes on the fourth and fifth ballots, and he was a candidate again in October 2023.
2026 race
Donalds launched his campaign for governor in February 2025, shortly after Donald Trump pledged his endorsement on Truth Social. The office is open because Republican Governor Ron DeSantis is barred from a third consecutive term. Donalds won the Republican nomination in the primary held on August 18, 2026, and his general election opponent on November 3, 2026, is Democrat David Jolly. A Donalds victory would make him the first Black governor of Florida.
