Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Angela Nixon was born on February 27, 1984, and grew up with her brother in the Moncrief neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida, raised by a single mother who held two jobs. She attended Stanton College Preparatory School and completed a political science degree at the University of Florida in 2007.

In 2008 she sought a seat on the Jacksonville City Council and lost, after which she joined the staff of Mia Jones, then the state representative for the 14th district.

Her other activities include co-founding an outdoor market for small businesses called the Melanin Market, writing the children's book The Adventures of Moxie McGriff with her daughter, Natalie McGriff, and founding the Jacksonville bookstore and café Cafe Resistance in 2024.

She has worked for the Service Employees International Union as its field director in Florida and, since 2022, has headed the voting rights coalition Florida For All.

Career

In the 2020 elections Nixon won a seat in the Florida House of Representatives after defeating the incumbent, Kimberly Daniels, in the Democratic primary for District 14, which takes in part of Duval County. After the 2022 redistricting placed her in District 13, she defeated unaffiliated candidate La'Ciara Masline and succeeded Tracie Davis. In 2026 she became a member of the Working Families Party and the Democratic Socialists of America.

2026 race

Nixon launched her campaign on January 22, 2026, for the Democratic nomination in Florida's special Senate election, held to complete the term Marco Rubio won in 2022 before he resigned in 2025 on his appointment as secretary of state.

Her platform called for universal health care, free childcare, a national rent freeze, heavier taxation of wealthy people and a $25 hourly minimum wage.

She won the primary with 56.1% of the vote against Alex Vindman, a former National Security Council official who had raised $16.3 million to her $975,000, a result described as a major upset. Her opponent on November 3 is Republican Ashley Moody, appointed to the seat after Rubio left.

Nixon is the first member of the Democratic Socialists of America to win a major party's Senate nomination.
