2026 race

New York's 12th congressional district, which lies entirely in Manhattan, is open in 2026 because Democratic incumbent Jerry Nadler, in the House since 1992, announced his retirement on September 2, 2025.

Caroline Shinkle, a lawyer, is the Republican nominee and also holds the ballot line of the Conservative Party of New York State. The Democratic nominee is State Assemblymember Micah Lasher, who won an eight-candidate primary with 38.9% of the vote, ahead of Assemblymember Alex Bores at 34.9%.

Independents Wilneida Negron, a political scientist, and Karen Ortiz, a former Equal Employment Opportunity Commission administrative judge, are also on the ballot. Shinkle faces all three in the general election on November 3, 2026.
