Biography & Campaign Analysis
Background
Laura Gillen was born on July 10, 1969, in Rockville Centre, New York, and grew up in Baldwin with four siblings. She attended Sacred Heart Academy in Hempstead and earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and government from Georgetown University in 1991.
After working at an entertainment agency, she traveled abroad, becoming a scuba diving instructor in Thailand and volunteering with the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata, India. On her return she enrolled at the New York University School of Law, receiving a Juris Doctor in 2000.
Gillen is married to Christopher Finegan, a producer; they have four children and live in Rockville Centre, and she is Catholic.
Career
Gillen began her legal career as an associate at Cahill Gordon & Reindel, where she worked until 2005, and then practiced commercial litigation at the Uniondale firm Westerman Ball Ederer Miller Zucker & Sharfstein.
In 2017 she defeated incumbent Anthony J. Santino by 2,268 votes to become Hempstead town supervisor, the first Democrat elected to the post in over 100 years.
She lost her 2019 re-election bid to Republican Donald X. Clavin Jr. and later taught as an adjunct professor at Hofstra University Law School.
Gillen first ran for New York's 4th congressional district in 2022, when Democrat Kathleen Rice left the seat, and lost the general election to Republican Anthony D'Esposito. She defeated D'Esposito in a 2024 rematch, flipping the seat. In the 119th Congress she serves on the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, and she is a member of the New Democrat Coalition.
2026 race
The 4th district lies on the South Shore of Nassau County, entirely within the town of Hempstead. Gillen, who was elected with 51.1% of the vote in 2024, is running for re-election as the Democratic nominee.
Her Republican opponent is Jeanine Driscoll, the Hempstead receiver of taxes, who won the Republican primary with 90.8% of the vote and also holds the Conservative Party line. Libertarian Blay Tarnoff, a systems engineer, is also on the ballot for the general election on November 3, 2026.
