Biography & Campaign Analysis

Background

Eli Crane, born Elijah James Crane in Tucson, Arizona, was raised in Yuma, where his father worked as a pharmacist. He graduated from Cibola High School in 1998 and studied sociology at Arizona Western College and the University of Arizona. One week after the September 11 attacks, Crane left college and joined the United States Navy.

Career

Crane served in the Navy from 2001 to 2014 and was deployed five times, three of them with the Navy SEALs. After leaving the military he co-founded Bottle Breacher, a company that makes bottle openers from bullet casings. He and his wife pitched the product on Shark Tank and received investments from Kevin O'Leary and Mark Cuban, and Crane sold the company in 2022.

In 2022 Crane won the Republican primary for the 2nd district, which redistricting had made more Republican, defeating state representative Walter Blackman and others, and he unseated Democratic incumbent Tom O'Halleran by 54% to 46%. In the House he is a member of the Freedom Caucus.

He was one of six Republicans who voted against Kevin McCarthy on every ballot in the initial 2023 speaker election and was later one of eight Republicans who supported McCarthy's removal as speaker.

In the 119th Congress he serves on the Committee on Homeland Security and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Crane was reelected in 2024, defeating Jonathan Nez.

2026 race

Arizona's 2nd district covers much of northeastern Arizona, including Prescott, Flagstaff and much of the Navajo Nation, and Crane was reelected there with 54.5% of the vote in 2024. He was unopposed in the 2026 Republican primary, receiving 89,205 votes. In the general election on November 3, 2026, he faces a rematch with Democrat Jonathan Nez, former president of the Navajo Nation (2019 to 2023), who was also unopposed for his party's nomination.
